Lifestyle Sessions

I get asked a lot if I shoot Newborn Sessions, and I always respond with, “I can come to your home and shoot a “lifestyle session” for you. It will mean that you’re in the photos…” There are some incredible newborn photographers here in Anchorage, two of which I recommend always, AK Design Studio or Autumn Clarkson Photography .

Lifestyle Sessions are more organic in nature and capture your home, and the family dynamic as it is.

This is the gorgeous Shibe family. I met Emma via email first. I was searching for a real estate agent, and I wanted someone that was not pushy, and would listen and be honest and fair. When I read her bio, I knew she was the one! Her and her partner Michelle were God sends for us. They are The dynamic duo at Anchorage Home Real Estate  if you’re in the market!

So back to family…the tables were turned for providing a personal service. I was honored to first capture some sweet baby belly shots for them before their precious girl arrived. 2014 Personal Favorites…and Why.

I found that this last year was the year of portraits for me. It’s always interesting and a little surprising to go back through all the sessions and  personal work, and find a common theme.

This is our son Shea, and below is his older sister, Kya. They spiffed up to tape their dad’s surprise birthday video, but meanwhile I snapped a few head shots by the window.

Charles and Jesse
This was a January wedding in Kealakekua, Hawaii. Their wedding was held at the groom’s parent’s house just up the road. I love this photo, because these are the same steps my hubby and I posed on for our wedding portrait almost 18 years ago. It was so neat to be back at Kings Mansion to photograph this sweet couple!
Her look says so many things….but sometimes the best portraits taken are ones that aren’t planned…in an unfinished bedroom…next to a toilet. (LOL!)
Taken outside with a smoking tiki torch adding a little drama.
Window light, amazing eyes, and a beautiful lady.
Teresa Marie
No lights, just natural light spilling into this stinky alley way. But hey, in March, you take what you can get in downtown Anchorage.
Sibling love…the only moment these two were in perfect symmetry.
I couldn’t get over her hair! What a beauty! If I would have stepped back, you could then see that the concrete wall ends on either side of her. The downtown bus depot sure makes a pretty backdrop. 🙂
Little Archer really had no clue we were trying for an epic superhero portrait, but this shot wrapped it up!
Sometimes you have to tell mom to leave the bubbles, they are just too cute!
Our family made it to Homer again this year and we were able to have some family from Alabama join us! This is my cousin Aiden. A nice man let the boys pull in their own fish!
Sometime the light is so perfect I literally get teary eyed…just saying.
Shiloh and Clinton
This was such a special and fun wedding. My hubby shoots weddings with me, so we both were able to capture his Captain’s big day for him and his lovely wife!
Alex and Rachel
Point Woronzoff’s only tree…just kidding…. sort of. It made a great filter for the beautiful sunset.
Kenzie and Daddy
Daddy’s girl. Back door window light in their living room. Who needs a studio! 🙂
Homer Boat
I couldn’t pass up this face.
Pearl is my favorite little girl to photograph…I always get the same tragic, yet peaceful look from her.
Johnson Family
I didn’t have to ask them to make these gestures…Money.
It’s a framer. Thankful I caught this.
Baby Cooper and her dog.
Mom and Dad wanted this sweet shot, so glad it happened!
The Connolleys
This mom and dad shot will be even more special when the kiddos are older. What a great family

Family part 2
The view from below! 🙂
This is our second annual ‘playing in the rain’ shot…We will try it each year.
Alaskan Family
This family really is strong in so many ways!
The security guards were too shy to tell us to leave….ha!
Sam and Cameron
These two know how to play! I love that about them.
Mom and Son
Kristen was my daughter’s 4th grade teacher, it was neat to take her family’s photos….I loved this genuine moment between her and her son.
Sometimes it’s all about finding the details, and symmetry, and color, and light…and sometimes all those things show up in a moment without looking for them.
Another Grace shot – even her shy look is stunning.
Say What?! This senior session was almost a wrap and then BOOM!
Walking by these two cuties at the fair and this guy was having a blast!
I’m in love with the lines and composition in the photograph, and my model was OWNING this dress, and pose.
Cheyanne’s dress and hair needed to be photographed against this color, never mind that it’s the back side of the JCPenny parking garage.
The bokeh, her hair, her high cheek bones. LOVE
It wasn’t working until I asked her to pull her hood up…then it was on – her whole mood, her look, her attitude.
I’m thankful someone painted the railings red. That is all.
Lacy belongs in the movies, she’s so dreamy
I love this because I took this from our back porch.
The softness and color are gorgeous, but her expression is priceless.
More deep thoughts…
Amanda and Steve
Steve with his two babies 🙂
Exit Glacier
“Would I like to fly out the Exit Glacier where you proposed and photograph your engagement shots?” YES.
It was incredible! One of my favorite sessions!
These girls did this session for their mom as a surprise!
Some of you are graced with an ability to look great in every shot…this little one is very photogenic.
She gets it from her big sister, Brittany!

Vanessa and Lowen
Such a genuine and true couple! Loved this wedding
Mom and son
Sweet smiles
My hubby, Tommy captured this moment of his younger brother getting ready for his wedding.
Ollie and Matthew
Ollie and Matthew
This moment happened so fast, I did what I could Manually, the rest I was able to do in post..bring up the light (it was pretty dark) and soften the colors…
They were talking about her sparkly shoes. I love these moments.
Sweet Eyes
Love a good 50mm, it’s all you really need as a photographer. The rest is all for fun.
This is her little brother looking out the window, looking mighty dapper!
Alaskan Rings
This was the bride’s idea, loved it!
We did it!
Expression is priceless.
This 10 sec portrait session was all too easy, but then again look how stunning my model is!

What is my passion?

Yesterday I was asked again…”What is your passion? What do you really LOVE to photograph?” I was relieved to be asked this again, because for days, for months really, something has been brewing. That something is this: Capturing Family, Motherhood, Marriage, LIFE!  When I capture families, I am with them for an hour. In one hour I can see the dynamics of what makes that family tick. The good, the bad, and the Funny. Ha!

I encourage, I listen, I laugh with them, I play with them. I capture them being them. My favorite parts of my family sessions: 5 minutes just spent on moms. Just 5 minutes, and I get these beautiful images of moms.

650-12 650-1-2650-4 650-6mersing-121

650-13 650-8 650-9 650-2

An image that is only about them, celebrating their strength, their beauty. An image to treasure not just because they are actually IN a photo, but that they were bold enough to let the world see them. I know this may sound a little silly or deep, but these are my favorite. Moms can feel forgotten in all the chaos of life, moms can and WILL put themselves on the back burner EVERY chance they can to see their hubby shine, or their kids have their moment in the spot light. And that’s beauty in itself. But  oh the wonders it does to our soul when someone notices us for who we are, what we do, and how beautiful we are – magic happens!

Then, don’t get me started on the 5 minutes, once kids are off and playing, when I get to focus on the couple. When I direct them into flirting, and touching, and enjoying their moment. Some couples have even thanked me for reminding them that it isn’t always about the children. The children came as a result of their love, their intimacy, their dreams. (Well, some kids came a little sooner… lol)

And of corse I can’t tell you how much joy it brings me to capture my client’s kiddo just the way they see them. It may be a posed smile, but it’s genuine, or it may be their typical grumpy face, but it’s sweet anyway. Or my favorite, it may be a photo that makes parent’s jaw drop and they can’t wait to get on the wall!   Crass-35Withrow-41Whitfield-47gunther1jabaay-84Studio033ingalls-41Studio075 farrell fam-18Studio127 mersing-28Anyway, FAMILY is my passion. EACH person in that family, no matter what dynamics that family is made up of. If this is what kind of session you are hoping for, call me. 🙂 Or, if this is what you’ve experienced, I’d love any feed back! Woolsey-18 baby peter-13 Fry HI 2013-51Fry HI 2013-54 Griffin-47jabaay-4-2 mersing-35Cassidy-29ingalls-9  vesel-2HUEY-24 11

I always wonder what they are thinking when they are focusing on you…sounds and smells are always evident in babies’ reactions, but that deep look….what’s going on in that little brain??baby peter-4

And oh how quickly moods can change.

My favorite part about lifestyle sessions: reminding parents to enjoy each other…and I’m not subtle. 🙂 Time passes so quickly, we only have these little ones for a moment, but we have each other for our remainder.

Baby Cassidy has arrived!

It was my delight when Kristen called me to photograph the beautiful new addition to her sweet little family. These two helped me right away. You will not find two cuter assistants than these boys.Cassidy(I think  momma would say that this photo sums up their personalities.)Cassidy-2

Cassidy-14After playing, mom and dad brought in baby sister Cassidy.

Cassidy-11I think she’ll be well protected and loved. ❤

Cassidy-23What precious parents, friends, and supporters of one another. I am unable to express what joy it is to leave a session and grin, because I was able to capture their genuine love.Cassidy-31

Cassidy-39Definitely the best part of family sessions. 😉Cassidy-41

Baby Jack

When I arrived at the Smith’s home, they showed me a few photos of fun ideas they have seen on the internet. I LOVE when clients make suggestions, or have special wishes – it makes my job a lot easier! I’m not lazy, it just helps me to get to know them all the more, so I can capture that fun and creative idea knowing that it came from them!
There is nothing like trying something new with clients just to have them look at you like you’re crazy! I have come to realize that being a photographer isn’t just knowing how to use your camera (believe me, I’ve done it all backwards if that’s the case!) Being a photographer to me, means that you need really good people skills, intuition, creativity. Being real with people, allowing them into your world, so the invitation into their world is natural and not forced. Putting someone at ease is very important because being photographed is actually very vulnerable for most people, myself included.
Ok, back to baby Jack… the family had the stars and moon/planet cut out and ready to go to try out the “astronaut scen” – very fun!
